Terre di Canossa 2020: the 10th rally is ready to go.

Even in such unusual and unsettling times as 2020, the team at Canossa Events and Scuderia Tricolore is ready to fire the engines of our passion at the 10th edition of the Terre di Canossa (1-4 October)

Covid-19 has created many organisational headaches and many regular competitors reluctantly had to miss out because of the new restrictions. Despite all this, Canossa Events has chosen to carry on and welcome its friends and fans with its usual style and a clear message: it’s time to get back on track, to get up and running again, to get back to our lives and our passions, like the passion for our vintage cars that have been waiting patiently in garages for months on end, in the hope of seeing sunlight again before winter.

Terre di Canossa is ready to go, obviously with the utmost attention to the safety of the crews, who we look forward to welcoming with our usual smile, even if it will be hidden by a face mask, as required by the health and safety protocol.

The 10th edition

The 2020 edition is celebrating an important milestone and so Canossa decided to mark the event with a medieval theme focusing on Matilda of Canossa, who was Queen of Italy in the 12th century. Everything was dedicated to her from the start, with the event highlights taking place in some fascinating historic locations.

The competitors will experience a taste of Medieval splendour and the atmosphere of the Middle Ages at the gala evening in the splendid setting of Tabiano Castle, built at the turn of the 11th century, at lunch on Friday at Filattiera Castle, built between the 12th and 13th centuries by the Malaspina family, and at the finishing line overlooked by the 12th century Rocca del Boiardo fortress.

This year, the rally follows an itinerary of about 650 km and includes around fifty timed trials, four average speed trials with secret passage checks and two special trophies: the Trofeo Forte dei Marmi and the Trofeo Tricolore for non “professional” drivers, who are always welcome. But the Terre di Canossa is not just a rally. It is primarily a winning combination of fantastic cars and gentlemen drivers who come here from far afield to enjoy this unique opportunity to get a special taste of Italy, combining the adrenalin of the competition with the delights of the best Italian food and wine, and the chance to explore the areas en route.

We can confirm some of the most popular ingredients in previous years have been included in this tenth edition: the departure from the beautiful Art Nouveau town of Salsomaggiore Terme, the road crossing the Cinque Terre with its scenic views of the sea, and the drive through Lucca city centre and across its ancient city walls, welcomed by flag bearers in medieval dress.

The two, highly-coveted trophies for non “professional” drivers are also back, along with the “Pre-War Cup” for pre-war cars, and the all-essential sundowner beach party at Forte dei Marmi, the pearl of Versilia. Another welcome comeback is the Naval Base at La Spezia thanks to the hospitality of the Italian Navy which always extends a warm welcome to the participants of the Terre di Canossa.

The organisers have also included lots of new elements to keep things interesting for regular competitors. These include the inaugural evening and lunch on Friday at two lovely medieval castles, the challenge of crossing Cisa Pass and driving through San Rossore Presidential Estate.

The race will end at Scandiano in the province of Reggio Emilia. Here, for the first time, drivers will compete to win the Trofeo Tricolore on roads climbing up through the hills, taking the crews to their last lunch location with a panoramic terrace overlooking the vast flat lands of Emilia below

A Green event

The organisers have reconfirmed their eco-friendly outlook by deciding once again to implement a CarbonZero protocol this year, requiring measures to be employed that can help reduce the impact on the environment, calculating the residual emissions of climatealtering gases. These emissions are then entirely compensated by planting trees in the Tuscan Emilian Apennine Mountains.

A “vintage” weekend with the 1000 Miglia and the Bologna-San Luca.

Two events with a strong heritage flavor characterized the Motor Valley weekend, a wonderful show for classic car fans.
The two stages of the Mille Miglia of Cervia, Parma and Bologna-San Luca were in fact the great attraction of this weekend in the land of engines.

1000 Miglia

A legendary ninety-first edition

Also this year the historical re-enactment of the Mille Miglia has stopped in the Motor Valley, and not once but twice.
The Freccia Rossa, in fact, on her journey with departure and arrival in Brescia, concluded her first test at Cervia-Milano Marittima on Wednesday 16th, while she stopped for the last time, before returning to Brescia, on Sunday at Parma.

A large crowd of enthusiasts welcomed the transit and the stops of the “traveling museum”” which saw the participation of 900 pilots and copilots in a journey that lasted more than 1,700 kilometers.

Juan Tonconogy and Barbara Ruffini won the event, the Argentine crew, number 85, on board the Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 GS “” Testa Fissa “” of 1933, crossed the finish line of Viale Venezia in Brescia with an active 74108 points.

For the Tonconogy-Ruffini it is the third victory of the Mille Miglia, after the successes achieved in 2013 and 2015.

Bologna – San Luca

The speed uphill

For Bolognese vintage car enthusiasts who have not been able to watch the Mille Miglia pass, instead, Bologna – San Luca has come to the rescue: uphill speed competition between historic cars that has seen cars of the caliber of the splendid Ferrari on stage 250 GT Sedan competition of 1960 by Hofer Egon or the very rare Ferrari Daytona Spider of 1970.

The race, after the initial parade of 15 other fascinating specimens along the arcades of San Luca, saw 50 drivers compete against the Basilica of the Blessed Virgin of San Luca.

Antonio Angiolani has been classified for the second time in a row over March 783 F3; according to Giuliano Palmieri on a De Tomaso Pantera, third Giuseppe Gallusi on a Porsche 911 SC and fourth Salvatore Asta on the BMW 2002 T.I .. All four drivers represent Scuderia Bologna Corse, organizer of the time trial.

In Cervia, the first stage of the 1000 Miglia starts off Motor Week.

Cervia and Milano Marittima are preparing for a weekend full of events dedicated to all fans of two and four wheels.

The Mille Miglia stage

The historic stages in Cervia and Milano Marittima

Only the Mille Miglia could start off this exciting weekend, starting on Wednesday May 16 in Cervia under the Tower of San Michele and then move in the evening to Milano Marittima in Piazza Garibaldi where fans will have the opportunity to admire the show of cars from 8pm onwards. The race will resume on the morning of May 17 from the pit stop in Ring del Pino in Milano Marittima.

MiMa On Track

A two-wheeled day

May 19th will instead be dedicated entirely to motorbikes with “” MiMa On Track “” known to sportsmen and lovers of the genre as the most famous SBK motorcycle show with Yamaha, Ducati and other numerous motorcycle clubs in the region making this a unique event. Guaranteed performance thanks to the acrobatics of the freestyler BMX Flatlander Luca Contoli and the participation of Andrea Pirillo.

Mototemporada

A historical re-enactment to close the Motor Week

The weekend will end on Sunday 20 May with the commemoration of Mototemporada, historic motorcycle competition held in Milano Marittima between 1964 and 1971 where enthusiasts can admire 30 beautiful vintage motorcycles. There will be bikes that have made the history of motorsport, like the MV of Agostini and Read, the Yamaha 250/350, the Ducati MGP of Capirossi, the Suzuki of Lucchinelli, of Ferrari and of Sheene, the Ducati of Bayliss and the Benelli of Provini.

1000 Miglia: the famous historical re-enactment of vintage cars on the streets of the Motor Valley

On May 16, the 36th edition of the re-enactment of the Mille Miglia kicks off, the classic route to Rome and return with departure and arrival in Brescia will also stop in Emilia-Romagna in the towns of Cervia-Milano Marittima and Parma.

New this year

It starts one day earlier

The date of the event – as per usual, one week ahead of the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix – this year will begin on Wedneaday instead of Thursday, taking off and ending in Brescia, crossing half of Italy, with a turning point in Rome. Every year, the route changes, to provide new scenery for the race.

The stages

Nothing new in the historic stages of the race

As in 2016, the Mille Miglia will be held in four stages over four days and will pass through some of the most beautiful and evocative roads in Italy. The first stage, starting in the early afternoon of Wednesday, May 16, will end in Cervia-Milano Marittima, while the third stage on Friday 18 will be concluded again in Parma, which in recent years has always reserved a fantastic welcome to Freccia Rossa. From here, on Saturday morning, the cars will return to Brescia.

The rules

There is no change in terms of race regulations, which remain unchanged in the sport section with 440 cars admitted to the race, selected by a special commission.
