From safety to the expression of a visual identity: the art of color by Colorificio Sammarinese in the docufilm “Oltre la Velocità”

On the occasion of the start of the MotoGP championship (Thailand GP, February 28 – March 2) and Formula 1 (Australian GP, March 14-16), Colorificio Sammarinese presented to the public the new docufilm Oltre la Velocità: a story that explores the role of specialized paints in ensuring safety, performance, and also in giving beauty and visual identity to the world’s most iconic race circuits.

Through the voices of riders, engineers, designers, technicians, and video contributions from Motor Valley partners, Oltre la Velocità offers an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at racing. It shows how technology and experience have radically transformed circuit safety standards over the years, highlighting the ongoing commitment to safeguarding riders at extreme speeds and to turning the sport into a work of art, made of breathtaking colors and graphics.

Franco Uncini (1982 world champion and a key figure in rider safety as IRTA delegate from 1993 to 2013 and FIM Safety Officer from 2013 to 2022), Giuseppe Muscioni (Honorary President of the FIA Circuits Commission, Platinum Inspector, and circuit designer), Aldo Drudi (designer and two-time winner of the prestigious ADI Compasso d’Oro, in 2001 and 2024, for motorsport projects), Christian Nuvoli (Technical Director R&D at Colorificio Sammarinese and responsible for paint solutions that revolutionized safety and functionality on tracks), Hugh Blackburn (Director of Roadgrip Ltd, world specialists in track marking and painting), are some of the protagonists of this multifaceted story. They retrace the milestones of the work done for circuit safety.

The central message of the docufilm is clear: safety is the foundation of every choice and action taken by all parties involved in race circuits. Every line, curb, and runoff area painted represents the result of a collective commitment to protect those who face extreme speeds with talent and courage.

Oltre la Velocità also documents the often invisible role of paints in Formula 1 and MotoGP circuits, showing how products like Samoline Antislip and Samoline XL Low Impact — anti-slip paints by Colorificio Sammarinese — have transformed the face of competition. How? By transforming the racing experience, making it safer, and therefore faster and more spectacular. From wet conditions to braking at the limit, grip makes the difference between a winning overtake and a crash.

But Oltre la Velocità also aims to celebrate the aesthetics of the tracks, highlighting the role of colors in turning each circuit into an open-air work of art. An iconic example is the design of the Misano World Circuit “Marco Simoncelli,” the #RideOnColors project by designer Aldo Drudi, who, as mentioned, received the prestigious ADI Compasso d’Oro award in 2024. The vibrant and bright colors, combined with the artistry of a world-renowned designer, not only make the on-track competition a spectacle for spectators’ eyes but also give each circuit a unique identity, turning it into a masterpiece of aesthetics and technology.
