Cesena

Cesena is a small city of art, rich in poetry. Everything here speaks of the Malatesta lineage that ruled in Romagna from 1295 to 1500.

The Biblioteca Malatestiana (1454) is unique in the world: it is a wooden monastic library still miraculously preserved today. In 600 years, no electricity has ever been used here, not even a candle, so as not to damage the 340 delicate manuscripts. The only light is that which filters through the windows. One enters in silence, in small groups, in semi-darkness. In the territory, the National Park of the Casentino Forests, Mount Falterona and Campigna is a vast forest in the Apennines, between Romagna and Tuscany: crystal-clear waterfalls, medieval abbeys, integral reserves such as that of Sasso Fratino with its Unesco ancient beech forests. Among the treasures of the Apennines is Bagno di Romagna, awarded the Orange Flag by the Touring Club. A network of cycle paths branches off in the park that cannot disappoint mountain-bike enthusiasts. Toward the coast, a place not to be missed is Cesenatico, a fishing village overlooking the port designed by Leonardo where the colorful historic boats of the Maritime Museum sway, while nearby Gatteo Mare is the capital of Romagnolo ballroom dancing.
