“Universa universis patavina libertas”—this is the motto that has always characterized the University of Padua, and it also embodies the spirit of freedom of culture and expression that prompted a group of students and faculty to leave the University of Bologna for Padua. The year 1222 is recognized as the year of its founding: in fact, that year marks the first recorded instance of a formal university organization.
