Fabrizio Schiano

Principal Investigator Leonardo

Fabrizio holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Automation Engineering from the University of Napoli Federico II. He began his career as a research scientist at Zentrum Fur Telematik in Wurzburg, Germany, working on Dielectric Elastomer Generators for energy harvesting from 2013 to 2014. In 2018, he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Rennes 1, Inria Rennes, with a visiting period at Boston University. His doctoral work focused on autonomous drone navigation in unstructured environments using onboard sensors and local communication.

In 2018, he joined the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) as a postdoctoral researcher, where he delved into modular aerial vehicles, drone swarms, and human-robot interfaces. He also led a project employing AI-based techniques to use drones for bird deterrence from sensitive buildings.

Since 2021 he is a research fellow at LeonardoCompany s.p.a. working on aspects related to autonomous flight. Since 2024, Fabrizio is the principal investigator of the Autonomous Systems Research Laboratory where he coordinates a team of 15 researchers.
